As I ask myself the question, do I need a new camera, and at that, a medium format camera, I do my research to help me have a healthy and comprehensive view of the topic. After digging through the rabbit hole of YouTube, I find this surprising gem.
This video has helped me crystallise a few thoughts:
My gear cannot weigh or slow me down.
I want a camera that I can carry everywhere with ease and make me feel comfortable and in the mood for photography. My longtime wrist injury and general strength level does not allow me to wield a heavy tennis racket or a heavy camera.
Fast and steady autofocus matters.
I’m not good at manual focus and my style of photography sees me picking up my camera on the fly to compose and make the image quickly. I need a snappy camera to help me out.
Balancing run and gun photography with a more considered approach.
I want to make images like
and Bryan Birks. The quality of their images through thoughtful composition and skilful technical handling of their gear is admirable. However, the truth of the matter is that this type of photography is hard hard work and I also like the free flowing style of photographers like Charlene Winfred. As helpful as the video is, it has not helped me understand why. Why do I need a medium format camera? Of course the answer to this question lies with me. Do I really need a really good camera to expose how average my photography is?
My “need” likely derives from a privileged, and materialistic desire to spend and consume. However, a little voice in the back whispers to me that making photographs is a creative journey. Inspiration and a willingness to try something new coupled with hard work and perseverance can produce something good and joyful for ourselves.
On less serious note, here is a video of Artie “helping” Chris
Good luck with chasing the dream.
I too am wanting a new camera! *Sigh*
